Can I practice with my cup/disc, or wear it before my period starts?Updated 5 months ago

Practice makes perfect, and this applies to your cup or disc too. You can absolutely practice with your cup or disc before your period starts, and wear it in anticipation of your period.

Here are some things to consider when you're doing this.

1) There's a learning curve. For some people that learning curve is longer than others. Start with getting to know your cervix height. Your cup or disc will need to be positioned correctly in relation to your cervix to function properly. Here's a great article on how to find and locate your cervix. Here's an article on cup insertion tips, and here's an article on disc insertion tips. Please remember that for many people cervix height fluctuates before, during, and after menses. You might find cup or disc insertion either more difficult or easier when you're not on your period. This is normal.

2) Vaginal dryness is at its peak during menses. This almost seems contrary because you would think blood would be a natural lubrication. Long story short, please use water-based lubricant as you're practicing with your cup or disc and mastering your learning curve. Water-based lubricant can aid with insertion and placement, and help alleviate any pressure or cramping you might experience as you're navigating your new cup or disc. Remember, a little goes a long way!

3) Be sure to clean it! Even though you might not be on your period, we do recommend regularly removing (every 12 hours), washing/rinsing and sanitizing your cup or disc. You can use a mild pH-balanced soap like our Saalt Wash, or simply rinse your cup or disc with water and sanitize it every few days. TSS is possible with menstrual cup or disc usage. Please read this article for more info on the TSS with cup or disc use.

4) Use our Help Center tips and resources! If you have a question, we likely have an article for it. Please use our robust Help Center to answer all your Saalt questions, or feel free to reach out to our coaches at though our contact us form
