Noticing blood leaking from your disc when peeing or having a bowel movement?Updated 7 months ago

If you notice that your menstrual flow has leaked (or gushed) into the toilet when using the restroom, it’s possible that your disc has self-emptied, AKA auto-dumped. Self-emptying can happen when the pelvic floor muscles contract, causing the rim of the disc to momentarily move out of place. This can result in some of the contents of your disc spilling. The rim will likely return to its original position to continue providing you a leak-free experience. To ensure that your disc is in the right position, use a clean finger to check that the rim of your disc is tucked behind your pubic bone. Some disc users love this feature because they can control releasing fluid from their disc without actually having to remove their disc. For others, however, it can occur at inconvenient times and takes some getting used to in order to control.

If you would like to empty your menstrual disc without having to remove it, try using a clean finger to press up on the basin of the disc while gently engaging your pelvic floor muscles. This may not work for everyone depending on each person's unique anatomy, but it is certainly worth trying if your Saalt Disc doesn't already self-empty while using the restroom.

To try to prevent your disc from self-emptying while using the restroom, we recommend propping your feet on a stool to raise your knees above your hips. This can help relax the pelvic floor muscles and prevent them from squeezing the disc rim too hard while urinating or having a bowel movement. Take deep breaths and refrain from bearing down too hard as this can also prevent leaks.
